Anna Maria’s arrival and on to Piran

Hey everybody. Well, today Anna-Maria finally arrived in Ljubliana after the missed flight yesterday. I picked her up at the airport this morning, but unfortunately her checked bag never arrived and the people at the airport have no idea where it is. Since everything for her week here was already booked and paid for, the best we could do was tell them where we would be located every night and hope that by some miracle that the bag will make it’s way to us at some point!

Since she had no clothes to wear, the first stop was H+M at a shopping mall for her to get enough clothes for a couple days. Not ideal, but better than nothing to wear!

She made it with only the clothes on her back and, oddly, all of her shoes that were in her carry on.
Hidden costs of international travel

After we got the shopping done, we headed to Predjama to have lunch and see the famous castle there that is built into the side of a mountain. Lunch was good, and the castle was a cool thing to see. Luckily, we beat the buses of Chinese tourists that began to arrive just as we were wrapping up.

We then headed to the coast and stopped in a town called Koper, which has a nice old town center once you get past the industrial/shipping area on the outskirts. We walked around there for about an hour and took in some of the sights.

Having a stroll through Koper with my personal tour guide. Anna Maria doesn’t go anywhere on vacation without a Lonely Planet tour book. She’s much more prepared than me!
I tried to convince her that she needed this hat, but to no avail.

Finally, it was time to make the short drive to Piran, which was our destination for the evening. Piran is the most famous Slovenian town on the Adriatic coast. It is just across the border from Trieste, Italy. Unfortunately for us, the old town (where our hostel is located) is closed to vehicle traffic unless you are a resident. So we had to park at the top of the hill in a garage and hoof all of our stuff in to town on foot. Fine for going down, but leaving in the morning is going to be a workout!

Making our way to the hostel. She volunteered to carry the guitar, which came in handy later in the evening when I gave a little show to about 10 of our fellow hostel guests and made a couple new Spotify fans from Germany.

After we got settled into the hostel, which is actually a nice little place in the old town (and has A/C 😁), we headed out to explore the main sights of interest. The most famous part is a large square in the middle with a marble floor. Otherwise, it is a myriad of alleys and passageways filled with shops, restaurants, and cafes. We had some fresh seafood at a place that our hostel owner recommended and had a little ice cream in the square after.

After all the exploring, we headed back to the hostel and sat on there terrace for a few minutes. We met a few other people there including a couple from Holland who, in their 60’s, are doing a 5 week bicycle trek from Salzburg, Austria to Venice. They wanted to hear some of my music, so I played them some tunes for about a half hour and they really seemed to enjoy it. Others came out to listen as well, and a couple guys from Germany added me on Spotify after I was done. No CDs sold, but encouraging nonetheless!

Tomorrow we are headed away from the coast and towards the mountains to Kobarid. Talk to you guys soon!

***In case you missed it because the email evidently did not send to my subscribers, I made a post yesterday about my first time busking in Ljubliana you might want to see!***
