Croatia round 1, return to Ljubliana, and the beginning of solo travel

Hey guys, sorry it’s been so long since the last update. There has been a lot going on and I’ve had no time to sit down and write!

After Harry’s departure on Thursday morning, Sam and I set off for Croatia. On the way, we wanted to stop by and see Melania Trump’s hometown of Sevnica since it was not far off our route. When we arrived to what we thought was her town, it seemed really small and in the middle of nowhere. At that point, we realized we had gone to the wrong town. After getting our bearings, we made it to the correct Sevnica. It was a pretty little town with a castle, but nothing too special to see as far as Melania goes.

After checking out Sevnica, we made our way to the Croatian border where I had to show my passport for the first time since arriving in Germany. All of the countries I have been in belong to Schengen, which is an area of free travel between member countries. Croatia is not a member, so we had to do our first real border crossing there.

After crossing the border, we made our way to our hostel that we booked for visiting Plitvice Lakes National Park the next day. It was in the middle of nowhere, but our hostel owner (Tom) really made our stay incredible. When he found out Sam and I were both musicians, he agreed to build a fire that night so we could have a jam session. He even helped me improvise a way to make some ice for our bourbons that night with some sandwich baggies full of water since he had no ice tray and there weren’t any available in the little store in town. Ice is not popular in Europe, so it can be a little hard to come by!

The following afternoon Sam and I went to see the Plitvice Lakes National Park. This park is full of lakes with many different colors of water and many waterfalls. Also many many tourists. It was expensive as well, but we both thought it was worth it to see.

After finishing up with the park, we made our way to our hostel in Zagreb where we just hung out mostly for the evening. In the morning, we got up and did a little tour of the city on our own, including going to see the beautiful cemetery above the town and a walking tour through the heart of the city.

After Zagreb, we crossed back over the border to Slovenia and made the two hour drive back to Ljubliana, since Sam had to catch his train back to Germany from there the next morning. Our hostel was right in the Metalkova and within walking distance to the train station for him. I hit up some guys I met over the last two weeks including Reggie, who is Serbian but has lived in Ljubliana for many years, and Jimmy, who is the lead singer of the Slovenian country band that we saw last week “Pointless Rebels”. We set up my sound equipment and Jimmy and I put on a little show for the people and made some more new friends and got a few tips.

This evening, I moved to my new hostel in Ljubliana called Vila Veselova. My friend in Montenegro knows the owner and arranged a deal with her that I get two free nights here for playing a concert tonight. I was super tired, but I gave them the best performance I could and I was pleased with the turnout and how attentive everyone was to the songs. Jimmy came out and played a few songs during my set breaks and together we were able to split about 40 euros in tips. I think it’s a pretty good deal to get to stay free and make a little money just for playing 2 1/2 hours of music to people who really wanted to listen!

That’s all I’ve got for today. Tomorrow I’m going to be in recovery mode from all the running around and partying with Sam. I have one more night here at Vila Veselova and in Slovenia, and then I will be headed back to Croatia and down the coast starting on Tuesday. I will always remember my time in Slovenia and all the great people I met – and I know I’ll be back!

Talk to you guys soon!

Great pics Zeb. Where did you get bourbon in Eastern Europe? Thought you would be drinking vodka by now!😀

Haha, the bourbon is just at the grocery store. Really poor selection, but it’s my go to drink so I gotta make do!
