Bucharest round 1, arrival to Sibiu

Hey guys, since the last time I talked to you I’ve be joined by Grant, spent two nights in Bucharest, and made our way to Sibiu.

On Wednesday night, I made my way to the airport to pick Grant up from his midnight arrival. Things went smoothly at the airport and we got back to the apartment and did some catching up before shutting down the evening. It was great to see him again after a few months!

In the morning on Thursday, we got up and set out into the cold day to do some exploring around the city.

Standing by for arrival!
There’s my buddy, getting “Lei’d” on his first morning in Romania and his first day of 5 weeks of co-piloting me through the end of my Euro trip.

After seeing some of what we wanted that was within walking distance, we grabbed an Uber and headed up to see the Casa Presei Libere. It was a building used as the headquarters of the state press during the communist times, and is a great example of Stalinist architecture.

The building is massive and was once the tallest building in Romania. Funny enough, it is still used as headquarters for many of Romania’s press outlets.

There’s your buddy, all bundled up for the coldest day of my trip so far. Winter is definitely arriving.
The new monument from 1990 commemorating the revolution. Prior to then, there was a statue of Lenin in this place.

After viewing the press building, we walked over to Beraria H, one of Europe’s largest beer halls, to grab some lunch and a beer. The place was massive, but empty in the middle of the day, and the food was good and plentiful.

Going full Oktoberfest style. I opted for the half liter.
Not even half of the place

After lunch, we walked around in Mihai Park for a while and then got an Uber back to our neighborhood about 5pm. It’s now getting to be pitch black by 5:30-5:45pm, so it’s harder to do as much sightseeing in a day this time of year. We have a few more things we want to see in the city that we are saving for when we are back there in about two weeks.

Grant commented that the crappy weather was perfect for seeing Bucharest and that if wouldn’t have been the same feeling in the sun. He was really in character on Thursday ๐Ÿ˜‚

A church from 1720 that was one block from our apartment.

After we got back to the neighborhood, we rested up for a couple of hours and then headed out to get some dinner and partake in the Halloween festivities in the Old Town. There were tons of people out Thursday night!

Getting a taste of Romanian food. Sarmale and Mamaliga.
Halloween and the cold weather was a good enough reason to bust out my Ukrainian headgear. I definitely got some comments on it Thursday night ๐Ÿ˜‚
The bar tender threw a piece of dry ice in my half beer and all hell broke loose. She comped me another one, so all was well.
Quite a reaction..
My buddy Mihai made it out to hang after his Halloween party at work. Once again, kareoke was the order of the evening.
Mihai’s costume was dead on ๐Ÿ˜‚

Old Town was full for all the Halloween parties.
A guy came by with a guitar at our last stop of the evening and we passed it around a couple times.
Here’s a Romanian crowd favorite that he played.
Somebody always takes a little too far.

Today, Friday, we got a bit of a late start on the road to our destination of Sibiu – 4 hours to the northwest. We took a detour to check out the city of Targoviste, which turned out to be a bit of a waste of time. Not a lot to see there except a tower. But we did get a good meal there before getting back on the road. We got to see a little bit of the scenery, but it got dark on us and we drove the last 2 1/2 hours in the dark, which was a bummer.

Feeling a little rough this morning, but the show must go on!

We saw a few horse drawn carriages on the drive today.

There’s the Fiesta pilot.
2 1/12 hours to go and already dark by 5:30pm..

Tonight we are in total rest mode. We will be getting up early to check out the city here, which is a historically German enclave within Romania, and then getting on the road to tomorrow’s destination of Timisoara. We will do either one or two nights there and then will be making our way to Belgrade, Serbia by Monday night for the Tuesday arrival of Dr. Bingman, who will be traveling with us for 2 weeks in Serbia, Bulgaria, and back to Bucharest for his flight home. In that 2 weeks, I have booked us 5 shows – so I’m super pumped for his arrival!

Talk to you guys again soon!
